Beavers Crest
When is a make up game not a make up game? When Surrey and Bayside are involved. This match was taking place a little late in the calendar, on December 14, 2019, but for various reasons December 14th it had to be.

SBAA 1st Div Men vs Bayside RFC - Win 19-10

When the match got underway Surrey picked up the early momentum and earned a penalty kick on an offside. The kick itself wasn’t on track, but the Beavers would get the ball back on the subsequent 22 drop out. At the 6 minute mark Bayside took a high tackle penalty. The long but make-able kick was missed again, which kept the Sharks at 0-0 with the Beavers. Surrey continued to own the majority of the play and again an undisciplined Bayside would take a penalty. The ball was kicked for touch. The Beavers won their lineout and pressed with rucking phases, eventually Joe Murphy broke out of the mass to score the first try of the game between the posts. Brandon “The Cat” Gatto converted putting the Sharks in a 7-0 hole. Bayside wasn’t really able to mount much of a threat and was having trouble with the basics. As was demonstrated when they took a penalty for a crooked throw in the lineout. The Beavers chose a scrum, as their sets were dominant, and ran a back row play that led to some rucking phases until David “Burger” Jeffreys crashed in for a Surrey try. The Gatto convert was solid and the Beavs lead doubled to 14-0. That’s how half time found things.

In the early going of the second half James Bailey went for a run, when he ran out of room he dished to Riley Johnson who made more Sharks miss. Captain Paul Kelly followed up and received Johnson’s pass, he finished the move with his try out wide. The convert attempt was unsuccessful. 19-0 for Surrey. With things appearing firmly in hand the Beavers appeared to go on cruise mode, taking their foot off the gas. Bayside found some late opportunity with their forwards gaining some hard yards, when suddenly they would have numbers wide which they took advantage of scoring the winger to crack their goose egg on the scoreboard. The Sharks’ kicker would miss his convert, 19-5 for Surrey still. Bayside seemed to glean some confidence from this success and kept on coming at the Beavs. The Sharks maintained a series of rucks when they would ramble up the park with the other winger taking off to finish the try. The convert was again wanting, so the score of 19-10 for Surrey would be the final score.

In the latter stages of this match Surrey appeared to let down mentally, physically and tactically. They maintained enough defensive tenacity to cut short a possible comeback by the Sharks. Though things may have been much different had there been 10 or 15 minutes more in the game. But that’s why rugby is an 80 minute game.
